Book Clubs

Book discussion groups have become an important part of bookselling, and, therefore, publishers and authors alike try, to the extent possible, to reach out to the tens of thousands of book clubs across the country.

One way for me to do this is through this website. In other words, this is a good place to suck up to the book clubs.

I know from my mail that hundreds of clubs have chosen one or more of my books as their monthly read, and I thank those clubs; with thousands of books to choose from, it's an honor that so many of my books have been picked for discussion.

I've gotten hundreds of questions from club discussion leaders or hosts prior to the book club meeting, and I try to answer as many as I can.

Generally, the answers to many of the questions I get can be found somewhere on my website, or the publisher’s website, if you browse thoroughly.  Also, in some cases, there’s useful information in the Author Foreword, or the Acknowledgment pages that are in most of my books.

So, between this website and Grand Central Publishing's website, and the book itself, there's plenty of information available for the book clubs to use in discussing any of my novels.

Plus, of course, the book clubs can simply Google my name to come up with various articles, interviews, and other odds and ends that would enhance a book discussion.

The book that seems to be the most popular with the clubs is THE GOLD COAST, which is my personal favorite. So, here are some discussion questions.

THE PANTHER is my latest book and here are some helpful questions...click here.

Unfortunately, there aren’t many discussion questions for BY THE RIVERS OF BABYLON, but here’s a few.

And if you are interested in general questions about the writing process...then click here.

Many book groups have read THE GENERAL’S DAUGHTER, partly because they’ve seen the movie.  It may be interesting to compare the book and the movie.  Also, the movie’s soundtrack is great to explore the effects the songs had on the story.

Other books I’d recommend for book clubs are WORD OF HONOR, and the five books that feature John Corey: PLUM ISLAND, THE LION’S GAME, NIGHT FALL, WILD FIRE, and THE LION.

I always enjoy hearing from the book clubs after they've read and discussed one of my novels.

I also get invitations to come and be part of the discussion group, and I've actually attended a few club meetings locally, here on Long Island, and these have been very interesting to me and hopefully to the group (see the photo of me with a book club in the Photo Galleries page).

If I had a genie in a bottle, my wish would be to be able to listen in as groups discussed my novels.

So, if you’ve already picked one of my novels, I hope you enjoyed it, and if you’re thinking about it, try one from my collection.

Many thanks for all your support and letters.
