A Note from Nelson DeMille

In my last Newsletter of December 2007, I promised to have another Newsletter out in April, when I finished the sequel to THE GOLD COAST. Well, I didn't finish in April, but I did finish last week, and now I'm unemployed, with time to write my Newsletter.

The new book is titled, THE GATE HOUSE, and will be published by Grand Central Publishing on October 28th, this year.

I'm very excited about THE GATE HOUSE, and I believe it's as good as, or maybe even better than, THE GOLD COAST. But rather than me making that judgment, you can click here for the Prologue, plus Chapter One and Two of THE GATE HOUSE. This preview, I hope, will entice you to run out and buy the book on October 28th, or Pre-Order it now, here.

By October 28th, we will all be sick of the presidential election campaign, and we'll be looking for escapist reading. If not, by the week after the election, we'll be trying to forget it with the help of a good novel.

My prediction, by the way, is that McCain will pick Hillary for a running mate, and Obama will pick Bill. That should be an interesting campaign and election.

Some movie news: I announced in previous Newsletters that Alec Baldwin was slated to star in THE GOLD COAST. Unfortunately, the screenwriters' strike threw off the schedules of many productions, and Alec Baldwin had to shoot a number of segments of his hit TV series, 30 Rock, in April, when he was supposed to start shooting THE GOLD COAST. Then, he had other commitments, so the movie of THE GOLD COAST is again in limbo. More on that when I hear something. More, too, on my other Books-into-Movie projects in September when the effects of the strike are over, and things return to what passes for normal in Hollywood.

The Powers-That-Be are redesigning my website, and the new, improved Nelson DeMille website should be up and running before THE GATE HOUSE is published on October 28th. I'm not sure what changes are going to be made, but please check back often to see if the new website is up.

My last novel, WILD FIRE, did amazingly well in hardcover and paperback, as I reported here a few times, and again I thank everyone who bought the book, and I even thank those who borrowed it from the library or from a friend. This would be a good time to return the book.

Many people wrote to me about what they perceive to be my political agenda in WILD FIRE. Some writers called me a left-wing loony, and some called me a right-wing nut. I can't be both, so I think I succeeded in writing about the war on terrorism with some objectivism and balance, and most readers agreed with that.

Interestingly, WILD FIRE is the first of my novels that will be translated into Arabic. I wasn't sure I wanted to sign that contract, but I did, though to play it safe, I sent my new Arabic publisher (in Saudi Arabia) a photo of my agent to use as the author's photo on the jacket. Hey, he gets 15% of the money, so why shouldn't he share in the risk? Agreed?

So, what's next? I'm thinking about a sequel to THE LION'S GAME, which will again pit John Corey, NYPD, and member of the Anti-Terrorist Task Force against his nemesis from THE LION'S GAME, Asad Khalil. I'll re-read THE LION'S GAME this summer, and if I like the book, I'll begin the sequel. Let me know what you think about that.

In anticipation of the release of THE GATE HOUSE, my publisher is reissuing THE GOLD COAST in two formats: A trade paperback (which is the same size as a hardcover) will be reissued in September and the regular size mass market paperback will be reissued in October.

So, if you're looking for summer reading, please read, or re-read, THE GOLD COAST, which will include a new Author Foreword, as well as the Prologue and the first two chapters of THE GATE HOUSE.

I'll get out another Newsletter in September, then maybe two in October to remind everyone to run out and buy THE GATE HOUSE on October 28th.

Have a wonderful, safe summer, and for my many friends and fans in Australia, New Zealand and the rest of the Southern Hemisphere, have a terrific winter. If you live on the Equator, well...you get to pick.

Sincerely,

Nelson DeMille

Coming to Stores October 28th: THE GATE HOUSE

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille delivers the long-awaited follow-up to his classic novel THE GOLD COAST.

When John Sutter's aristocratic wife killed her Mafia don lover, John left America and set out in his sailboat on a three-year journey around the world, eventually settling in London. Now, ten years later, he has come home to the Gold Coast, that stretch of land on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America, to attend the imminent funeral of an old family servant. Taking up temporary residence in the gatehouse of Stanhope Hall, John finds himself living only a quarter of a mile from Susan who has also returned to Long Island. But Susan isn't the only person from John's past who has reemerged: Though Frank Bellarosa, infamous Mafia don and Susan's ex-lover, is long dead, his son, Anthony, is alive and well, and intent on two missions: Drawing John back into the violent world of the Bellarosa family, and exacting revenge on his father's murderer Susan Sutter. At the same time, John and Susan's mutual attraction resurfaces and old passions begin to reignite, and John finds himself pulled deeper into a familiar web of seduction and betrayal. In THE GATE HOUSE, acclaimed author Nelson DeMille brings us back to that fabled spot on the North Shore a place where past, present, and future collides with often unexpected results.
